how it SEALS

Eternal Cedar Spas strives to bring you the most authentic experience when soaking in a cedar barrel tub. We don’t put a liner between you and your main experience; the Western Red Cedar. Each tub is individually hand-made in Campbell River from the milling of the wood, to the heavy duty 3/16” stainless steel banding holding it together. The lumber is clear, kiln dried cedar to allow the most amount of water to absorb into the wood. The sealing process starts when you begin to fill it up by the wood absorbing the water. The majority of the sealing will happen quite quickly, giving it a 98% seal within the first couple of days. As water drips through the seams, top up the tub with water until the seams have swollen tight. Once the tub is full, leave the water in the tub after use to keep the wood swollen to maintain its tight seal. The wood will absorb water in the tub at a very slow pace, and you will only need to top up the water before the next use, cutting down fill time.

Enjoy the benefits of a chemical free ice plunge buy simply topping up the tub with fresh hose water as needed. To start experiencing cold therapy benefits, the water temperature on your cold plunge should be below 15°C. Because of our North American climate, your cold tap water averages around 10-12°C. If you're just starting your cold plunge journey, this temperature is perfect for you. Adding ice to this will further reduce the temperature by 3-7 degrees depending on how much ice you use. The west coast aesthetic looks great on any deck or patio!

To maintain the temperature in your hot tub, adding fresh water weekly is not ideal. To keep your water clean, adding a dissolving chlorine tablet into the tub after each use will ensure a bacteria free spa. Drop one into the tub after each once, or 4-6 times a week if using irregularly. A standard hot tub full water cycle is recommended every 3-4 months. To clean the tub before re-filling, pressure wash the inside with the drains open. Re-fill, add a chlorine tablet, and enjoy!

Health Benefits

The Ice Plunge

Ice baths are a power-house method for keeping a healthy mind and body. The well-known athlete recovery method of soaking in an ice bath after a workout or sports game, remains the dominate way to help ease sore muscles and reduce inflammation. Then there is the immune system, a complex defense system in the body which we are able to boost and make stronger. It is often the body’s first defense against viruses and bacteria. One of the best natural ways of doing this is with a routine cold plunge. A routine ice bath may help to increase T cells and anti-inflammatory chemicals in the body while decreasing pro-inflammatory cytokines to promote a stronger immune system. The mental health benefits have shown to improve mood and decrease stress by training the brain to be okay with being uncomfortable. The cold shock puts you into a controlled parasympathetic state, training your brain to find a state of calm in an extreme environment. The psychological benefits may help in dealing with stressful situations, making them more manageable. Studies have also shown that regular ice baths are one of the best preventative measures for cold and flu bugs. By having your blood circulate faster through your body while cold, it allows your white blood cells to find and kill off harmful bacteria before they have a chance to make you sick. The Hot Plunge

Hot tubs are a great way to let a long day go before bed and is an optimal way to get hydrotherapy. The soothing effect of a warm water plunge may help relieve joint and muscle pain as well as emotional and mental stress. Hot water therapy may help ease tight, tense muscles, and can help avoid injury before a workout. If you have arthritis, the heat action may help with stiffness and inflammation in the joints. In North America 1 in 3 adults suffer from some type of sleep disorder, including insomnia. According to research, the simple relaxation gained from a soak in the hot tub may be enough to help you drift off into a deeper sleep. Some researchers hypothesize that regular thermal therapy using hot tubs may improve impaired insulin sensitivity and be beneficial for managing diabetes. Relaxing in a hot tub can also raise your heart rate and lower your blood pressure.
